I’ve been playing Phantom Abyss since it first entered early access and I will not be stopping anytime soon now it’s officially launched. The adrenaline-fuelled gameplay gives me so much joy every time I do a run, whether I’m playing it casually or seriously trying to challenge myself.

For the average joe who wants something to play after work, I can’t see it holding much long-term interest. It’ll certainly entertain you for a few nights, and you might even tell some friends about it, such is the novelty of the experience. But it all felt a bit surface-deep for me.

Now the game forces you to take damage, forces you into traps, and worst of all the entire game feels lonely. No more are there ghosts that die in silly ways, now you have to just hope that one of the million rng maps have a ghost on it.

However, trying to figure out how items unlock or any wider narrative implications is a more frustrating endeavour.

Treasure is found in chests hidden throughout each temple, redeemable at statues between floors that offer one of two presented blessings, adding other strategic decisions to the action.

The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. 1.0 update sorta killed the vibe for me lots of changes that are worse than in previous versions. I would recommend this if it just rolled back a few updates.
